Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Gujarat Titans in a high-scoring thriller played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 9 April 2023 in the IPL 2023. The match will be remembered for Rinku Singh as he smashed 5 successive sixes in the final over against Yash Dayal to help KKR produce one of the best wins.
The match looked down and out with Rashid Khan taking the hat trick. Rinku Singh came to the crease and showed his class with clean hitting. With 28 runs required off the final 5 deliveries, Rinku smashed 5 sixes in succession to give KKR a thrilling 3-wicket win. The left-handed Rinku remained not out on 48 off 21 deliveries with 1 four and 6 sixes.
Chasing down 205 runs to win, KKR lost 2 early wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Narayana Jagadeesan cheaply. Venetaksh Iyer came as an impact player putting enough pressure on Nitish Rana to bring back KKR into the game. Alazzari Joseph struck to dismiss Rana with a simple catch to Shami at mid-off. Iyer and Rana added 100 runs for the 3rd wicket.
The match was in favour of Gujarat Titans when stand-in captain Rashid Khan took a hattrick dismissing Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Shardul Thakur. Nitish Rana came to the crease and showed his class with a breathtaking knock to help KKR stun defending Champions Gujarat Titans. With 4 runs required off the final delivery, Singh smashed a six giving KKR 2 important points. With this win, KKR moved to 2nd place in the points table.
“This match will be remembered for the ‘Lord Rinku’ show. Obviously, everyone ruled us out before the last two overs, but to come back from there and win is something that won’t happen every day. We’re going to cherish this game for a very long time.”
