Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan became the fourth batter in IPL history to remain unbeaten 99. He achieved this feat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 9 April 2023 in the IPL 2023.
SRH captain Aiden Markram won the toss and decided to field first. Punjab King’s batting lineup failed to deliver as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Shikhar Dhawan made the batting look easy on a wicket that helped the bowlers.
Dhawan kept one end up and completed his fifty of 42 deliveries. Punjab Kings looked down and out as they lost their ninth wicket with the scoreboard reading 88 for 9. Dhawan took the charge keeping the strike showing his class hitting some lovely shots to put pressure on SRH bowlers. Mohit Rathee gave good support to Dhawan.
It was a superb knock as Dhawan hit and remained unbeaten on 99. Thanks to his brilliance, Punjab Kings posted 143 for 9 in 20 overs. Dhawan and Rathee added 55 runs for the final wicket. For SRH, Mayank Markande took 4 for 15, and Umran Malik and Marco Jansen took 2 wickets each.
Harry Brooks opened the innings along with Mayank Agarwal. Both openers gave a decent start before being dismissed. Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram put on a brilliant partnership for the 3rd wicket to help SRH register 8 wickets win with 17 balls to spare. Shikhar Dhawan was named Player of the Match award for his 99 off 66 deliveries including 12 fours and 5 sixes.
Three other batters are unbeaten on 99 in IPL
Apart from Shikhar Dhawan who joined the list of elite batters to remain not out on 99. The Indian Premier League history witnessed 3 other players achieve this milestone.
Suresh Raina became the first player in IPL history to remain unbeaten on 99. He achieved this milestone against Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2013 edition.
The Universe boss, Chris Gayle showed his might for Punjab Kings against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2019 edition.
Punjab Kings former opener Mayank Agarwal achieved this milestone against Delhi Capitals in the 2021 edition of IPL.
