Since making his Test debut in June 2021, Ollie Robinson has made a significant contribution to England’s red-ball team. In his first 17 Test matches, he has amassed 70 wickets at a stunning average of 21.15.
With three five-wicket hauls to his name, the 29-year-old has received high praise from both the public and the media for his work. However, there has been some controversy surrounding Robinson’s brief England career.
On that note, here’s a look at three times the pacer was involved in a controversy:
1 Ashes 2023
Usman Khawaja, an Australian opener, had an outstanding first innings performance in the ongoing first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, scoring 141 runs off 321 deliveries. Khawaja was eventually struck out by Robinson, who gave him a special send-off and told the batter to “f*** off.”
He also called Khawaja a “f***ing p*ick,” which brought on a lot of criticism, especially from Australian quarters. Robinson stated in a press conference following the day’s play that he didn’t care how the opposition or the general public interpreted his comments.
The Ashes are in action; this is a match in professional sports. Robinson questioned, “What can you handle if not that?”
2. Vs India, 2021
In the second Test of a five-match series between India and England in 2021, Virat Kohli, the captain of India, criticized Robinson when he came out to bat on Day 5.
The guy (Robinson) laughed at me when I missed a cover drive. He is currently playing to maintain a home test. How important this particular innings is in a test match.
Come on then, big mouth,” Kohli said to the fast bowler. Ollie Robinson received harsh criticism from Indian fans and some experts for making fun of Kohli during the game.
3 Old Tweets
In his first Test match for England against New Zealand, Ollie Robinson’s old tweets came to light. The tweets from ten years ago were blatantly offensive, racial, and sexist. Robinson expressed remorse for what he had done and said he had since changed.
The pacer was given an eight-game suspension and fined 3,200 pounds. The Professional Cricketers’ Association advised him to enroll in educational programs as well.
