Team India skipper Rohit Sharma heaped praise on veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who made his comeback to the ODI setup in the ongoing series against Australia. Rohit expressed that Ashwin’s rhythm has assured the team backup option for Axar Patem for the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup.
Axar Patel sustained a left quadriceps strain during Asia Cup 2023. He was expected to make a comeback in the third ODI against Australia, however, he is yet to recover completely. If Axar gets ruled out of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Ravichandran Ashwin will be a likely replacement.
Talking about the veteran spinner, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said, ahead of the third ODI in Rajkot,
“He has got the class. He has got the experience of playing the sport and handling the pressure. It is just that he has not played ODIs in the last year or so.”
“But you cannot take away the class and the experience the individual has over the years and in the last couple of games we saw how well he bowled,” he said.
“He has got a lot of variation up his sleeve and in case there is a chance, we can look at a lot of things. Hopefully, the way things are at this point, it does well for us because we have got all the backups ready,” added Rohit.
Rohit Sharma happy with India’s performance in recent ODI matches
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma expressed happiness over the team’s performance in the recent matches. India won the 2023 Asia Cup and has an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three-match ODI series against Australia. They will be keen to continue the winning momentum leading into the ODI World Cup.
“I am very happy with the last 10 ODIs that we played. A lot of guys came back into form (by) scoring lots of runs and the bowlers are taking lots of wickets. In the last few games, we saw the guys who came back from injuries have proven their fitness,” said Rohit Sharma.
“(We are) pretty much settled in how we stand, where we stand. Now, it is about taking this whole situation forward in the best possible way,” he added.
