In the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Pakistan and Afghanistan locked horns in a thrilling encounter on Monday, October 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Pakistan Captain Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first. His team’s decision was vindicated by the openers Abdullah Shafique (58 off 75) and Imam-ul-Haq (17 off 22), who added 56 runs for the first wicket in 61 balls.
Following the dismissal of Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam walked to the crease to take Pakistan’s innings forward. During his innings, a notable moment was witnessed on the pitch as Mohammad Nabi, the Afghan spinner, gave him a warning to not leave his crease early. The incident took place in the 16th over as Nabi walked in to bowl the first ball of the over. However, he stopped in his delivery stride seeing Babar walk out of the crease.

Mohammad Nabi had every right to warn Babar Azam. According to Law 41.5 of the Laws of Cricket, “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the moment when the ball leaves the bowler’s hand, the bowler is entitled to request the umpire to put the non-striker out of the game.”
If the umpire judges that the non-striker is out of their ground, they will signal a run out. The non-striker will be out of the game and will not be able to bat again.
It was commendable of Mohammad Nabi to give Babar Azam a warning. He could have easily appealed for a run out, especially since Pakistan was in a strong position at that time. However, Nabi showed great sportsmanship by giving Azam a chance to correct his mistake.
Babar Azam acknowledged Nabi’s warning and thanked him for his sportsmanship. He also apologized for leaving his crease early.
The incident between Mohammad Nabi and Babar Azam was a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship in cricket. It also showed that even the best players in the world can make mistakes.
