Before Kohli’s dismissal, the Indian team faced challenges with three wickets down for 81 runs, despite a brisk start by captain Rohit Sharma, who contributed 47 runs off 31 balls. The onus was on Kohli and KL Rahul to establish a partnership and avert the risk of a batting collapse. Kohli and Rahul adopted a cautious approach throughout their partnership, adding 67 runs in 109 balls for the fourth wicket. It appeared that they intended to continue this strategy until the 30th-35th over before accelerating the run rate.

However, Kohli’s unexpected dismissal disrupted this plan, leaving Rahul tasked with anchoring the innings. In response to Kohli’s departure, India made a strategic move by promoting Ravindra Jadeja ahead of Suryakumar Yadav.
