What Does The IPL 2024 Trade Window Involve? Rules Clarified

The IPL auction for the 2024 season is scheduled for December 19 in Dubai. Prior to that, all 10 franchises are required to finalize and submit their retention lists by the deadline on Sunday, November 26.

November 26 marks the conclusion of the trade window, the period leading up to the retention list announcement. During this time, franchises have the opportunity to engage in player trades.

This can occur through either player exchanges between franchises or outright purchases using cash transactions. Additionally, if multiple franchises express interest in buying a specific player, the selling franchise retains the privilege to decide the destination for the player.

Importantly, player consent is a prerequisite for any trading or transfers within the league. The final approval for trade deals lies within the purview of the IPL governing council.

IPL 2024 exchange deals

Only a few trade deals have occurred as the IPL 2024 retention deadline approaches. Lucknow Super Giants traded West Indies’ bowling all-rounder Romario Shepherd to Mumbai Indians (MI), who has played four IPL matches, securing three wickets.

In addition to LSG, Romario Shepherd has played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL. The 28-year-old joined Mumbai Indians through a trade for his current fee of ₹50 lakh.

Meanwhile, in a swap deal, Indian pacer Avesh Khan moved from Lucknow Super Giants to Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Devdutt Padikkal transferred from RR to LSG as part of the arrangement.

LSG acquired Avesh Khan for ₹10 crore in the 2022 mega auction, and RR secured Devdutt Padikkal for ₹7.75 crore at the same event.

Avesh has participated in 47 IPL matches, claiming 55 wickets, while Padikkal has played 57 IPL games, accumulating 1521 runs, including one century and nine fifties.

Is Hardik Pandya making a return to Mumbai Indians?

There are reports suggesting that all-rounder Hardik Pandya might rejoin the Mumbai Indians franchise after leading Gujarat Titans to victory in the 2022 season and finishing as runners-up in 2023.

The major obstacle for Mumbai Indians, if they are considering bringing Pandya back, is the significant cost of ₹15 crore.
