After the appointment of Salman Butt as a consultant for the Pakistan Cricket Team, Wahab Riaz removed him from the post after one day. It was done because of media pressure and intense public.
Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal, and Iftikhar Rao were appointed to the consulting panel on Friday. The Pakistani media and public pressure made sure that Wahab Riaz removed Salman Butt from his post.
“Salman Butt isn’t on any PCB panel. For me, he is a good cricketing mind who understands cricket and has been covering domestic cricket for the past 2-3 years. He was made my consultant just to get his opinion, based on which some media houses and people started doing propaganda,” Wahab was quoted as saying in a press conference.
“As a chief selector, it’s my decision as to who will work with me and whose support I need. But people started discussing nepotism and dosti, due to which I am reverting this decision. I have already spoken to Salman Butt and told him that he cannot be a part of my team,” he added.
The chief selector Wahab Riaz reversed his decision to remove Salman Butt from the position after Pakistan Cricket Board faced criticism for picking him for the post. They will be in charge of the T20I series against New Zealand away from home starting on 12th January 2024.
Salman Butt involved in spot-fixing scandal
Salman Butt was involved in a spot-fixing scandal in 2010. He was the former captain of the Pakistan team along with Mohammed Aamir and Mohammad Asif. Salman Butt was banned by International Cricket Council for 10 years and sent to prison in the United Kingdom.
Butt was a decent opener that played 33 Test matches, 78 One-day internationals and 24 T20Is matches. He played his last Test match against England on 26th July 2010. Butt was impressive with attacking style and helped Pakistan register victories.
The three-man tribunal gave its verdict. He played out a maiden over but another charge was that Butt did not report in advance and ordered Asif and Aamir to deliver no-balls.
