The Chennai Super Kings were uncharacteristically busy in the 2024 Indian Premier League auctions on Tuesday, December 19 in Dubai. They signed Kiwi all-rounder Daryl Mitchell for a whopping INR 14 crores, and uncapped player Sameer Rizvi for INR 8.6 crores. They also secured smart steal deals, signing the likes of Shardul Thakur and Rachin Ravindra in the first two sets at the auction table.
Chennai Super Kings entered the bidding race for Daryl Mitchell late. Initially, it was a tussle between the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. The Chennai Super Kings entered the war at INR 12 crore and secured the deal for INR 14 crore. The all-rounder has earlier played for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.

The defending champions were also in a bidding war for youngster Sameer Rizvi. The Uttar Pradesh cricketer is known as the “right-handed Suresh Raina”. He was signed by the franchise for INR 8.6 crores. Rizvi came to the limelight when he scored 455 runs in the UP T20 League, scoring two hundred for the Kanpur Superstars in the tournament.
Chennai Super Kings steal buys
Earlier, the Chennai Super Kings signed Rachin Ravindra for just INR 1.8 crore. The Kiwi batter had a brilliant ICC ODI World Cup 2023. He was the fourth-leading run-scorer in the tournament, slamming 578 runs, including three centuries and two fifties. This will be Rachin Ravindra’s maiden Indian Premier League season.
Meanwhile, Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur will be returning to the Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming season. He played for the franchise from 2018 to 2021 in the tournament. Shardul has played 86 IPL matches, taking 89 wickets at an economy rate of 9.16, and has scored 286 runs at a strike rate of 140.2.
