The Sunrisers Hyderabad broke the bank for World Cup-winning Australian skipper Pat Cummins at the 2024 Indian Premier League auction. He was signed for a whopping INR 20.50 Crore after an intense bidding war on Tuesday, December 19 during the auction in Dubai.
There was a bidding war initially between the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians for Pat Cummins. Royal Challengers Bangalore also joined in later. However, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who entered the race late, was finally able to secure the deal. Cummins became the highest-paid player in the history of the IPL after the deal. However, Mitchell Starc went on to break the record later in the auction.

Pat Cummins had previously played for the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He was signed by the Knight Riders for INR 15.5 crore in the 2020 auction. However, he was released by them and then brought back again a couple of seasons later for INR 7.25 crore. Overall, he has 45 wickets at an economy rate of 8.54 as well as 359 runs.
The Australian skipper has had a great 2023, year. He led Australia to the World Test Championship title in June and then followed it up by retaining the Ashes in England. Recently, under his leadership, Australia defeated India to win the ODI World Cup. The Sunrisers Hyderabad also signed another World Cup winner, Travis Head. They secured the deal for INR 6.80 crore at the auction. They also signed pacer Jaydev Unadkat and all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga.
