In big news for Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant has been named as the captain for the upcoming IPL season starting from 22nd March. He did not feature in last year’s IPL due to a horrific accident and was undergoing rehabilitation.
He will return to professional cricket after a gap of 14 months. Pant featured in the pre-camp training session in Vizag. David Warner was appointed as Delhi Capitals captain for IPL 2023. Under his leadership, DC had a disappointing outing finishing 9th in the points table.
DC Chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal said, “We are delighted to welcome Rishabh back as our captain. Grit and fearlessness have always dictated his brand of cricket, and not surprisingly, even his road to recovery. I can’t wait to see him walk our team out once again as we look forward to a new season with renewed passion, vigor, and enthusiasm.”
Team co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi said, “Rishabh has worked incredibly hard during one of the most challenging phases of his life. His teammates will take immense inspiration from that as they embark upon a new season. Captain Rishabh and the team has our best wishes.”
Pant had been doing drills for wicketkeeping and batting for the last couple of months at the National Academy in Bengaluru. The wicketkeeper batter posted to fans about his recovery with small details about training.
It augers well for Delhi Capitals in the upcoming season. Lungi Ngidi will not play a part Frager McGurk will be his replacement. The retained core players including Mitchell Marsh, Warner, Vicky Otswal, Shaw, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Khaleel Ahmed, Yash Dhull, and Ishant Sharma for the upcoming season.
Harry Brook has withdrawn due to personal reasons. Tristian Stubbs has been bought for Rs 50 Lakhs, Ricky Bhui for 20 Lakhs, Kumar Kushagra for 7.20 Crore, Rasikh Dhar for 20 Lakhs, Sumit Kumar for 1 Crore, Shai Hope for Rs 75 Lakhs and Swastik Chakkara for Rs 20 Lakhs. Jhye Richardson set to miss the first half of the IPL.
Rishabh Pant is eager to prove his mettle again
After a long gap, Pant would be eager to showcase his mettle again with bat and stake a claim in the T20I squad for the 2024 World Cup to be played in the USA and West Indies.
Pant is known for his aggressive style which would be needed by the Delhi Capitals side. They will start their tournament against Punjab Kings on 23rd March at Mullanpur.
