Over the years, a few MS Dhoni lookalikes have garnered attention and enjoyed their moments of fame. A video circulating on Instagram featured the captain of a flight who bore a striking resemblance to the Indian cricket icon.
Meanwhile, Dhoni made headlines on March 21 when he relinquished his role as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, a day before the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between CSK and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
The seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman passed on the captaincy to opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad. Meanwhile, well-known Bollywood photographer Viral Bhayani posted a video from a flight featuring a captain who bears a striking resemblance to Dhoni.
The video was accompanied by a playful caption:
“New captaincy loading. MS Dhoni speaking from cockpit of aeroplane. He can fly plane too?”

Opinions on the video of Dhoni’s lookalike as a captain on a flight varied. While some were amazed by the resemblance, others felt that the captain bore no resemblance to the Indian cricket legend at all. Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the greatest white-ball batsmen and captains in cricket history. He scored 10,773 runs in 350 ODIs at an average of 50.57, including 10 centuries and 73 half-centuries.
As a captain, he is the only one to have led a team to victory in all three ICC white-ball tournaments: the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan disclosed that he was unaware of Dhoni’s decision to resign and only learned about it shortly before the captains’ meeting.
“Whatever Dhoni does, it is in the best interest of the team. I got to know of the decision just before the captains’ meeting. You have to respect his decision. It’s his call,” Viswanathan was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

This marks Dhoni’s second instance of relinquishing leadership at CSK. In 2022, he delegated the role to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, only to reclaim it later due to Jadeja’s challenges. During Dhoni’s tenure, Chennai Super Kings secured their fifth IPL title in 2023, matching the record, triumphing over Gujarat Titans (GT) with a five-wicket victory [DLS method] in a nail-biting final.
