The participation of former India skipper MS Dhoni in the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia is the most debated question in the country right now. With the Indian Premier League (IPL) postponed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dhoni’s chances look bleak. But former New Zealand all-rounder Grant Elliott believes the legendary cricketer should be a part of the T20 extravaganza if he is fit.

Meanwhile, Dhoni has been on a sabbatical since India’s lost to New Zealand in the rain-marred semifinal of the ICC World Cup 2019 in England. He copped severe criticisms for his below-par performances throughout the tournament. However, MS Dhoni was mulling a return during the Indian Premier League (IPL) and had already started his training at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

But with IPL postponed, everything hangs by the wire. While the former chairman of selector MSK Prasad mentioned that they have moved on from Dhoni, but he still remains the most debated person in Indian cricket. And Grant Elliott believes that 38-year-old should be in the plane to Australia considering that he brings so much to the table.

“He is not too old to not play it. It totally depends on his fitness really,” Elliott said to Cricfit.  I look at someone like Rishabh Pant and I’m like woah! I don’t know how he looks after himself but Dhoni looks after himself like a professional.

If his fitness is good, if his eyes are good, and reflexes are going then he should play. Because you can’t beat anything with experience in any form of the game,” the 41-year-old added.

However, it will be interesting to see how things pan out when cricket resumes after the pandemic. It will be a difficult task for the relatively new selection committee led by former cricketer Sunil Joshi. MS Dhoni has so far played 98 T20Is scoring 1617 runs including two fifties.
