Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne was outdone by a superb delivery from England’s Brydon Carse in the fourth ODI at Lord’s on Friday, September 27. The right-handed batsman managed only four runs off 10 balls before being bowled by the fast bowler during a challenging run chase.
Marnus Labuschagne stepped in at No. 5 in the Australian batting order after both Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh were dismissed within eight balls. Australia was well on their way to successfully chase down the 313 target, in a 39 overs per side bout. However, England clawed back into the game and took wickets and left Australia in a difficult situation.
The trouble for the visiting team increased when Josh Inglis was dismissed too after a rather tame batting display. Labuschagne was supposed to bat through the innings and bring stability, but he too had to walk back to the pavillion after being unluckily stunned with a naked peach from Carse after three balls were bowled post Inglis’ dismissal.
The right-handed batter seemed to watch a length ball to be defended. However, after pitching, a slight seam movement was noticed and pitched nearer the off stump. Labuschagne ended up playing the ball too slowly as the ball sneaked in-between his bat and his body and struck the top of off stump.

Labuschagne showed promise at the onset of the series with an impressive fifty but has seen his scores decline steeply thereafter. He made a mere 19 runs at Headingley but was particularly unfortunate to be given out in Durham, which gave him the third duck of his ODI career.

Again, thanks to Carse’s double strike that reduced the tourists to 93-5, did Archer manage to claim Glenn Maxwell who had on an embarrassing two runs seeing Australia sink even further. At the moment when the writer was busy, in- form Alex finds himself at one end without getting support from the resources – lower order unit as the greater portion of the target remained unscored.
Carey and Sean Abbott put up a little partnership bringing the total to 112-6 after 21 overs. England are overwhelming favourites to achieve a great comeback and level the series after losing 2-0 and drag its last match to be played at Bristol on Sunday.
