Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has stirred a debate over national pride by criticizing the Bharat Army, one of India’s most prominent cricket fan groups. During commentary at the first Test against Australia in Perth, Gavaskar took issue with how the Bharat Army incorporated their name on the Indian national flag, calling it disrespectful and urging compliance with the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.

The Controversy Explained

During the Test match in Perth, Gavaskar observed that the Bharat Army’s flags featured the group’s name along with the national tricolor. He called this out as a violation of India’s flag code, stating it disrespected the sanctity of the flag.

“I know that in India it’s not accepted. I don’t think these [fans] are really Indians. I’m not too sure how many of them have Indian passports, so they probably don’t understand the value, the relevance, the importance of the Indian flag,” Gavaskar said while doing commentary on ABC Sport.

This Act strictly governs the use of India’s national symbols. Section 2 explicitly prohibits lettering or modifications on the flag. As per the law, “The national flag shall not be used as a portion of costume or uniform or accessory of any description which is worn below the waist of any person nor shall it be embroidered or printed on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, undergarments or any dress material.”

Sunil Gavaskar’s Perspective

Gavaskar expressed his gratitude for the Bharat Army’s support but urged them to respect the flag’s sanctity. He suggested creating a separate identity for their group through a new flag design.

“All Indians, including me, are very grateful for the support that they bring to the Indian cricket team wherever the Indian cricket team is playing. We are really, thankful and grateful for that, but I would request them not to have their group’s name on the India flag,” he added.

Gavaskar proposed the Bharat Army design a unique flag for their group, emphasizing it would allow them to maintain their identity while respecting the law. “If you design a new flag of your own, I will myself wear it with great pleasure,” he said.

The Bharat Army, founded in 1999, is an enthusiastic group of cricket fans dedicated to supporting the Indian cricket team globally. With over 160,000 members worldwide, the group is known for its passionate cheers and unwavering support. However, their modified flags have now drawn criticism.

The controversy sparked mixed reactions. While many agreed with Gavaskar’s sentiments, others felt he was being overly critical. Members of the Bharat Army highlighted their deep love for Indian cricket, but some acknowledged the need to adhere to flag regulations.

Despite this controversy, the Bharat Army’s contributions to Indian cricket remain significant. Their chants and presence have boosted team morale, making them an integral part of India’s cricketing culture.
