In a landmark decision, Devajit Lon Saikia has been appointed the acting secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This move comes after Jay Shah’s transition to the role of ICC (International Cricket Council) Chief. Saikia, a former first-class cricketer from Assam, is set to hold this position until September 2025. The decision underscores the dynamic changes within Indian cricket and highlights the BCCI’s commitment to maintaining leadership continuity.

Who is Devajit Lon Saikia?

Devajit Lon Saikia hails from Assam, a state known for its growing contribution to Indian cricket. With a strong foundation in the sport, Saikia has been an integral part of the cricketing community. Saikia’s career as a first-class cricketer shaped his understanding of the game at a grassroots level. His experience on the field has given him valuable insights that he now brings to cricket administration.

Beyond playing, Saikia has been an active administrator, earning respect for his commitment and organizational skills. His appointment as acting secretary reflects his credibility and potential to handle the responsibilities of this pivotal role.

The Appointment of Devajit Lon Saikia

Jay Shah’s election as ICC Chief created a vacancy in the BCCI Secretary post. Using his constitutional powers, BCCI President Roger Binny appointed Saikia as the interim secretary. Binny expressed confidence in Saikia’s ability to steer the board effectively. His statement highlighted a clear belief in Saikia’s leadership and dedication. In his letter to Saikia, Roger Binny emphasized the importance of the role and expressed trust in Saikia’s capabilities.

“The president shall in the event of vacancy or indisposition shall delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up or indisposition ceases. Accordingly, I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb,” Binny wrote to Saikia.

New ICC Chief Jay Shah

On December 5, Jay Shah made his first official visit to the ICC headquarters in Dubai, marking a new chapter in his leadership. During this visit, Shah had the opportunity to meet with ICC Board Directors and other staff members, discussing strategies for the future of the sport.

“This visit provided an invaluable opportunity to connect with my colleagues on the ICC Board where we discussed the initial roadmap and strategies to shape the future of this incredible sport.
