Jasprit Bumrah, a premium pacer in India’s bowling arsenal, has made headlines yet again but this time, it’s not for his on-field heroics. Recent rumors about him being advised bed rest following a back injury have sparked widespread concern among fans. However, Bumrah has taken to social media to dismiss the reports, labeling them as “fake news.”
Bumrah’s Injury: Facts vs. Rumors
The initial buzz suggested that Bumrah had been advised complete bed rest and was being discouraged from returning to competitive cricket too soon. These claims spread like wildfire, causing alarm among fans. However, Bumrah quickly addressed the rumors with a lighthearted yet firm response, tweeting, “I know fake news is easy to spread but this made me laugh. Sources unreliable.” The original tweet from a content aggregator on X was deleted after Jasprit Bumrah responded with a quote tweet.

Details of Bumrah’s Current Condition
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that Bumrah’s back injury does not involve a fracture. However, he has swelling that requires close monitoring. The National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru will oversee his rehabilitation, ensuring he regains full fitness before returning to competitive cricket.
The uncertainty around Bumrah’s fitness has delayed India’s announcement of their 15-member Champions Trophy squad. The BCCI has even sought an extension from the ICC to finalize the lineup, highlighting the pacer’s critical role in the team’s strategy.
“He (Bumrah) will be going to NCA for his rehabilitation. The initial report says he doesn’t have a fracture but has swelling on his back. So the NCA will monitor his recovery and he will be there for three weeks. But even after that, he will have to play a match or two, even if they are practice games organised to check his match fitness,” a BCCI source had told the Indian Express.
Misinformation can be damaging, but Bumrah handled it with poise. By addressing the rumors directly, he set the record straight and shifted the focus back to his recovery. India has not yet announced their provisional squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The final list must be submitted by February 13.
Bumrah’s Role in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Bumrah was instrumental during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, delivering stellar performances with both the ball and as a stand-in captain. His ability to lead and perform under pressure makes him an indispensable asset for India.
During the series in Australia, Jasprit Bumrah bowled 151.2 overs across five Test matches, achieving an impressive average of 13.06 and a strike rate of 28.3. He stepped in as the stand-in captain for the first Test in Perth when Rohit Sharma skipped the match, and also led the team in the final Test in Sydney when Rohit decided to sit out.
The BCCI has taken a proactive approach, ensuring that Bumrah undergoes a thorough recovery process. His stint at the NCA will focus on rehabilitation, with practice games planned to assess his match fitness.
Bumrah is expected to spend at least three weeks at the NCA. Post-rehabilitation, he will participate in practice games to ensure he is match-fit. This phased approach aims to prevent a relapse of his injury. Bumrah’s absence would undoubtedly affect India’s pace attack. While potential replacements like Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are capable, Bumrah’s unique skills make him irreplaceable.
