India’s newly appointed T20I vice-captain, Axar Patel, has revealed a dynamic approach to the middle-order batting line-up ahead of the five-match T20I series against England, starting Wednesday in Kolkata. Speaking at a press conference, Patel emphasized that while the openers’ roles remain fixed, the batting positions from No. 3 to No. 7 will adapt to match conditions and player form.
Axar Patel’s Improved T20 Performance and Versatility
In recent years, Axar Patel has showcased remarkable progress as a T20 player, proving his ability to adapt to different batting positions. Known as a floater, Patel has delivered consistent performances in the format. According to ESPNcricinfo, his T20 stats reveal significant improvement over time. Until the end of 2022, Patel averaged 21.26 with a strike rate of 131.25.
However, since the beginning of 2023, he has elevated his game, averaging 30.32 with an impressive strike rate of 145.62. During this period, he also registered six half-centuries at various positions, underscoring his versatility. Patel’s all-around skills add depth and flexibility to the Indian T20I side, making him a key player for the England series.
Flexible Strategy for Middle-Order Batting
Discussing the team’s strategy, Patel highlighted India’s adaptable approach to middle-order batting. “It’s not just about me,” he said. “Since 2023-24, the openers’ roles have been fixed, but players from Nos. 3 to 7 are prepared to bat at any position.” He added that the batting order would be tailored based on opposition bowlers and match situations to maximize player contributions.
This strategic flexibility is aimed at enabling the team to respond effectively to evolving game scenarios, ensuring India remains competitive in challenging situations.
Leadership Role and Team Preparations
As vice-captain to Suryakumar Yadav, Patel acknowledged the importance of quick decision-making on the field. While he noted that leading a settled T20I side minimizes pressure, the role still demands focus on tactical adjustments during games. He also expressed the team’s determination to build on the momentum from their successful 2024 season as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup.
Additionally, Patel welcomed the return of senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who is back in the squad after recovering from an ankle injury. Shami’s comeback, Patel said, brings valuable experience to the team, strengthening their bowling unit.
