Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign has taken a major hit with the official ruling out of star pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. The announcement, made by selection chair George Bailey, confirmed that both players are managing ongoing injuries and have not recovered in time for the tournament. This leaves Australia in a precarious position, requiring at least four changes to their original 15-man squad.
Why Are Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood Out?
Pat Cummins has been nursing an ankle injury that worsened after a grueling Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. Josh Hazlewood has been dealing with a hip issue after previous side and calf injuries disrupted his playing time. Both players are currently undergoing rehabilitation and were deemed unfit for the Champions Trophy.
Cricket Australia has confirmed that both bowlers will enter an extended period of rehabilitation. They are also missing the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka. Their availability for the IPL remains uncertain, potentially impacting their preparations for the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June.
Australia’s Squad Adjustments
Apart from Cummins and Hazlewood, Australia will also miss Mitchell Marsh (back injury) and Marcus Stoinis (retirement from ODI cricket), leaving significant gaps in their bowling attack and all-rounder options.
Australia has included a mix of promising young talents and experienced players to fill the void left by their star players. The new additions for the two ODIs against Sri Lanka and potential Champions Trophy replacements include fast bowlers Sean Abbott, Spencer Johnson, and Ben Dwarshuis, leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, spin-bowling allrounder Cooper Connolly, and batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk.
Selection chair George Bailey remains optimistic about the situation despite the setbacks, stating, “While disappointing, it does present a great opportunity for other players to perform for Australia in a world event.”
This signals confidence in the next generation of Australian cricketers stepping up in high-pressure tournaments.
Who Could Replace Cummins and Hazlewood?
Australia must finalize their squad by February 12, with potential fast bowling replacements including Sean Abbott (international experience and batting skills), Spencer Johnson (impressive domestic performances as a left-arm quick), and Ben Dwarshuis (solid white-ball bowler excelling in T20 leagues), with two likely to make the final Champions Trophy squad.
Leadership Dilemma: Who Will Captain Australia?
With Cummins and vice-captain Marsh unavailable, Australia needs a new captain, and Coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that proven leader Steve Smith and dynamic player Travis Head are the frontrunners for the role.
McDonald said, “Steve Smith and Travis Head are the two that we’ve been having conversations with while we’ve been building out that Champions Trophy team along with Pat back home. They’ll be the two that we look at for that leadership post. They’re the two obvious ones. Steve has done a great job here in the [first] Test match. He’s done some good work in one-day international cricket across the journey as well. So it’s between those two.”

Challenges for Australia’s ODI Squad
The first ODI against Sri Lanka is set for February 12, the same day Australia must finalize its Champions Trophy squad. The Test series against Sri Lanka has left limited preparation time for key players like Smith, Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, and Mitchell Starc.
Starc is unlikely to play the ODIs due to workload management. With Marsh and Stoinis absent, Australia only has Aaron Hardie as a seam-bowling allrounder. Beau Webster, a Test allrounder, was not included in the ODI squad.
