Australian allrounder Marcus Stoinis has suddenly called it quits on ODIs with immediate effect. Such an unexpected decision would sideline him from the coming Champions Trophy.

Stoinis, 35, had a significant role in their World Cup triumph in 2023 and played six matches in the tournament. Apart from an ODI one month back, he was being considered for selection for the Champions Trophy, especially seeing Cameron Green was out with injury.

Stoinis’s retirement from ODIs is shocking, considering his involvement with the Australian team of late. His absence would likely affect the preparations of the Australian team for the Champions Trophy, for which they had considered relying on his experience and skills.

Australia’s selectors now need to start reconsidering the rest of their team and alternatives to ease the gap created by Stoinis’s retirement. The Champions Trophy takes place later this year, and Australia would want to make a significant mark there.

“I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan”- Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis declares his retirement from the ODI. Ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, Australia’s situation is made worse by Stoinis’ decision to retire from ODI cricket. Given the absence of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh from their preliminary roster, they will need to make at least four changes.

“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,” Stonis was quoted as saying.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support,” he added.

He amassed 1,495 runs at an average of 26.69, including his lone international century of 146 not out against New Zealand in 2017. In addition, he has claimed 48 wickets.
