The second ODI between India and England at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, on February 9, 2025, witnessed an unexpected disruption when one of the floodlight towers failed, leaving players and fans in frustration. This unusual event halted India’s innings, raising concerns about the stadium’s infrastructure and the need for renovation.
A Fiery Start for India
Chasing a competitive total of 305, India’s openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, gave the team an explosive start. Their 48-run stand in just 37 balls set the tone for an aggressive chase. Rohit, in particular, was in sublime form, smashing one four and three sixes, electrifying the crowd.
The Unexpected Interruption
Just as the momentum was building, a sudden floodlight failure in the seventh over forced the game to a standstill. The unexpected blackout led to on-field discussions among umpires, captains, and officials. Eventually, both teams walked off the field while authorities worked to resolve the issue.

Barabati Stadium’s Infrastructure Concerns
Odisha Cricket Association’s acting president, Pankaj Lochan Mohanty, addressed the pressing need for stadium renovation. He emphasized that while partial renovations had been completed, full-scale development required government support.
“It was supposed to get renovated, this is a very old stadium. We have all the facilities, have made partial renovations as you can see. We have been in talks with the government,” Mohanty told the Indian Express.
Government Involvement and Plans for Renovation
Mohanty highlighted ongoing discussions with the new government post-2024 elections, stressing that BCCI’s infrastructure fund alone wouldn’t be sufficient. He suggested that while a new stadium was being considered, Barabati Stadium should be redeveloped for cricket to prevent it from becoming obsolete.
“With the government changing in 2024, the OCA is continuing their talks with the new government for support. “Without government funding, we cannot do a complete overhaul. BCCI will support with their infrastructure fund, but we need government support. The new government, they are also keen to develop. They wanted to build another stadium,” added Mohanty.
“As there are so many stadiums now, we are getting matches once every two years. So, this stadium will go to waste (if a new cricket stadium is built). So, we told them that whatever facility they want to build, it could be done for other sports while redeveloping this stadium for cricket. It will be renovated. The government will help us to renovate and make it a vibrant stadium again,” he said.
England’s First Innings Performance
Earlier in the match, England posted a strong total of 304 in 49.5 overs. Joe Root (69 off 72) and Ben Duckett (65 off 56) led the batting effort. India’s Ravindra Jadeja was the standout bowler, taking three wickets for just 35 runs in his 10-over spell.
