West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican was awarded the ICC Player of the Month for January, narrowly beating India’s Varun Chakravarthy to claim the award. The two-series-test matches against Pakistan where Warrican shone like an incandescent star earned him this honor.

On two rank-turners, Warrican bagged 19 wickets that helped West Indies draw 1-1 with Pakistan. In doing so, he restricted the home dominance of Pakistan spearheaded by their two heroics of Sajid Khan and Noman Ali.

Warrican had career-best figures that helped steer the visitors to victory this series, and his nomination was truly deserved for the effect that he had in that series. Varun Chakravarthy took a commendable 14 wickets in 5 matches against England, but it was Warrican’s performance in the longer format that made him a favorite. This award certainly demonstrates Warrican’s rising reputation as a capable spinner in international cricket.

Jomel Warrican, a spinner representing the West Indies, was named the ICC Player of the Month for January 2025 after leading his team to a decisive run that tied the series in Pakistan.

“It’s an honour to win this award,” Warrican told ICC after winning the award.

“One of my goals this year was to get my first five-wicket haul in Test cricket, but I never imagined it would come in such a grand way! I see this as a small step in my cricketing journey, and I’m looking forward to many more. I promised my captain something special for this series, especially after my father, my biggest supporter, predicted I would have a phenomenal performance,” he added.

“Multan holds a special place in my heart—not just because of the historic win for the West Indies, beating Pakistan away from home, but also for earning this prestigious award,” concluded Warrican.

The 32-year-old was given the honor for the first time, and it was only the third time a player from the West Indies had done so. The previous honorees were Gudakesh Motie and Shamar Joseph, both in 2024.
