Former Mumbai captain Milind Rege, often regarded as the encyclopedia of Mumbai cricket, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 76 due to cardiac arrest. An off-spinning all-rounder, Rege played 52 First-Class matches during Mumbai’s golden era, contributing to five consecutive Ranji Trophy titles.
His playing career was briefly halted by cardiac issues in his late 20s, but he made a comeback and later built a distinguished career off the field. Beyond cricket, he led the Tata Sports Club and managed communications at Tatas. He also played a crucial role in Mumbai cricket as a selector, known for discovering and nurturing young talent.
From Sachin Tendulkar to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rege was among the first to recognize and support emerging stars. For the past four years, he served as an advisor to the Mumbai Cricket Association.
Rege, often seen as Sunil Gavaskar’s close friend, was a mentor to Mumbai cricketers and corporate players. Known for his sharp analysis, communication skills, and ability to connect with young talent, he was also respected as a TV commentator and cricket expert.
“I’ve Lost My Support System”- Sandeep Patil Mourns Milind Rege
Former India all-rounder and coach Sandeep Patil honored Rege’s memory, calling him an irreplaceable part of his life. Speaking to ‘sportstar’ from Kolkata, Patil said:
“I’ve lost my support system today. At my book launch in November 2024, he told me, ‘See you in Kolkata.’ I was eagerly waiting for his visit.”
“He played a crucial role in my life both on and off the field. He and his wife, Raj, supported me during my toughest times. Mumbai has lost its greatest supporter, and his impact on nurturing young talent is unmatched. He remained devoted to Dadar Union, CCI, and MCA. Even in his later years, he was dedicated to Mumbai cricket as a selector and administrator. I will miss him dearly.”
Former India women’s captain and MCA advisor Diana Edulji called Rege her mentor.
“I woke up to the heartbreaking news of my guide and friend Milind Rege’s passing. We played in the same era, and his contribution to Mumbai cricket was exceptional. As MCA advisors, his ideas always prioritized Mumbai cricket’s growth. He will be greatly missed in future meetings,” she said.
Rege is survived by his wife, Raj, sons Siddharth and Aditya, and their families. His last rites will be held in Mumbai on Thursday.
