India’s Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Bangladesh in Dubai featured several remarkable individual performances. Mohammed Shami emerged as the star, claiming five wickets and surpassing Zaheer Khan to become India’s leading wicket-taker in ICC tournaments.

His brilliant spell of 5/53 helped India keep Bangladesh to a modest total of 228. Shami also became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets, easing concerns over the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

Despite Bangladesh’s early collapse at 35/5, Towhid Hridoy (100 off 118 balls) and Jaker Ali (68 off 114 balls) fought back with a resilient 154-run stand for the sixth wicket. Hridoy’s maiden ODI century was a gritty effort, balancing caution and aggression to keep his team in the game. However, his innings, along with Ali’s, was aided by Indian fielding lapses, including a dropped catch by Hardik Pandya when Hridoy was on 23.

Indian Fielding Errors Costly

While India’s bowlers dominated, the team had its share of slip-ups on the field. Rohit Sharma missed a straightforward catch, denying Axar Patel a hat-trick after he had dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim and Tanzid Hasan on consecutive deliveries. KL Rahul also had a tough day behind the stumps, missing a stumping chance that could have dismissed Hridoy. His mistake was followed by a visibly frustrated reaction from Virat Kohli, and commentator Harsha Bhogle pointed out that it was India’s third fielding lapse of the match.

The fielding struggles continued during the middle overs, allowing Bangladesh to rotate strike and relieve some pressure. Ali, too, was given a lifeline when he was dropped on the very first ball he faced. These missed opportunities allowed Bangladesh to recover from a disastrous start and post a fighting total.

Shami and Harshit Rana Deliver for India

Despite the fielding errors, India’s bowlers ensured that Bangladesh could not fully capitalize on the dropped chances. Shami made an immediate impact, dismissing opener Soumya Sarkar in the very first over. He soon added the wicket of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, thanks to an excellent catch by Shubman Gill in the slips. Later, Shami returned to break the crucial partnership by removing Jaker Ali and added two more wickets to his tally.

Supporting Shami was young pacer Harshit Rana, who impressed with figures of 3/31. Selected over Arshdeep Singh, Rana provided crucial breakthroughs and kept the pressure on Bangladesh. With Shami leading the charge, India’s bowling unit ensured that fielding errors did not cost them too dearly, setting up a manageable chase.
