India Must Start Building for 2027 ODI World Cup, Says Kumble

Indian cricket legend Anil Kumble has emphasized the importance of transition planning for the national team as they prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Speaking ahead of India’s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh, Kumble highlighted that head coach Gautam Gambhir has some “tough calls” to make regarding the squad’s future, regardless of how the team performs in the current tournament.

The Need for Transition in Indian Cricket

With some senior players nearing the twilight of their careers, India must start integrating young talent to ensure a smooth transition. The 2027 ODI World Cup may seem far away, but selecting a core squad now will provide the necessary time to develop team chemistry and strategy.

Anil Kumble’s Perspective on Squad Evolution

Kumble stressed that successful World Cup teams usually consist of a group that has played together in at least 20-25 matches. This consistency allows players to adapt to match situations and develop trust in their teammates. He pointed out that a fresh, young team needs to be identified and nurtured.

Kumble said, “You could say this is a very important tournament for a coach who has to make those tough calls in terms of transitioning from the legacy players to the others. But that’s the job of the coach, to make those hard decisions.”

Former Indian skipper added, “This tournament could determine where those seniors would go, and where India would look at making those changes. Win or lose, you need these tough calls to be made at the earliest. You need to start looking ahead in white-ball cricket, especially at the 2027 World Cup.”

While Gambhir has had an impressive record as a T20I coach, his tenure in ODIs and Tests has been less successful. With India’s recent losses in ODIs and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Gambhir must navigate the challenge of rebuilding the squad with a mix of experience and fresh talent.

The Legacy vs. the Future

A major dilemma for Gambhir will be deciding which senior players should be phased out. While some veterans may still have a role to play, the focus should be on grooming younger players who can carry India forward into the next ODI cycle.

To prepare a core squad for the next ODI World Cup, it is essential to build a cohesive unit that comprehends match dynamics. Key factors involve selecting young players capable of consistent performance, ensuring a balanced team with batters, all-rounders, and bowlers, and providing consistent opportunities to a core group. Additionally, lessons from past World Cup campaigns should be taken into consideration.

Kumble commented, “In any World Cup, you’re looking at building a squad that has played at least 20 or 25 matches together. That’s when you understand the nuances of match situations, and who to rely on. Ideally, at the end of this tournament, you must start looking ahead to the next World Cup. Do the seniors make it there? Or do we give the opportunity to youngsters to take the team forward in the shorter formats and build a strong unit? These are questions Gambhir needs to address.”

Kumble concluded, “He (Gambhir) has a fresh, young team and plenty of players to choose and build from, so he needs to organically start preparing for the 2027 World Cup. In T20Is, he’s done well. Suryakumar Yadav has been a great captain. The next World Cup is still two years from now, and the new set of players will need a consistent run of games playing with each other, to understand many things like the batting order, match situation, and tactics.”
