Indian captain Rohit Sharma set a new record as the fastest opening batter to reach 9,000 ODI runs during his 20-run innings in the ongoing 2025 Champions Trophy clash between India and Pakistan on Sunday, February 23. He surpassed Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar to achieve this milestone.
Tendulkar had previously held the record, reaching 9,000 ODI runs as an opener in 197 innings, whereas Rohit accomplished the feat in just 181 innings. Additionally, Rohit has become only the sixth opener in ODI history to cross the 9,000-run mark.
He joins an elite group featuring Sachin Tendulkar (15,310), Sanath Jayasuriya (12,740), Chris Gayle (10,179), Adam Gilchrist (9,200), and Sourav Ganguly (9,146). Ganguly reached the milestone in 231 innings, securing third place, while Gayle (246) and Gilchrist (253) follow in fourth and fifth.

Rohit Sharma falls short of a big score against Pakistan in the 2025 Champions Trophy
Although Indian captain Rohit Sharma surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record, it was the sole highlight of his innings against Pakistan in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Opening the batting, he failed to capitalize on his start in the run chase. Rohit began confidently and looked in great form but couldn’t convert it into a substantial score.
He was dismissed for 20 off 15 balls, hitting three fours and a six at a strike rate of 133.33, taking on the Pakistan bowlers early on. Earlier, India delivered a stellar bowling performance after Pakistan opted to bat first, bundling them out for 241 in 49.4 overs.
Kuldeep Yadav (3 wickets) and Hardik Pandya (2 wickets) played key roles in restricting the opposition. Despite Rohit’s early departure, India got off to a strong start in the chase, reaching 64/1 in the first 10 overs.
