Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has made a bold prediction regarding the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal between India and Australia in Dubai. According to him, India, led by Rohit Sharma, has a strong advantage over Australia, primarily due to the difference in their spin attacks.
Gavaskar highlighted that Australia lacks quality spinners compared to India, which could be a major setback for them on the slow and turning tracks of Dubai. He further emphasized that the absence of key fast bowlers like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc weakens the Australian side significantly.
Australia’s Weakness in Spin Department
Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar pointed out that while Australia possesses a powerful and aggressive batting lineup, their spin department does not match up to India’s. Given the pitch conditions in Dubai, he believes that this could prove to be a decisive factor in the semifinal clash. He suggested that India might benefit from chasing rather than setting a target, as it would allow them to capitalize on Australia’s potential struggle against quality spin bowling.
Dubai Pitch Conditions and New Zealand’s Struggles
There has been considerable debate about the playing conditions in Dubai, especially after New Zealand failed to chase a 250-run target against India. The Indian spinners delivered an outstanding performance, making it difficult for New Zealand’s batters to settle. However, Gavaskar dismissed the idea that the pitch was impossible to bat on.
He explained that during the early overs, spinners did not get much assistance, but as the match progressed and the surface was rolled after dew had settled, the ball started gripping better. He credited India’s bowlers for executing their plans exceptionally well, making it difficult for New Zealand. Gavaskar’s insights indicate that while the Dubai pitch offers some turn, it is not unplayable, and the team that adapts better will have the upper hand.
