New Zealand faced a significant blow ahead of their Champions Trophy final against India on March 9, as key pacer Matt Henry was ruled out due to a shoulder injury sustained in the semi-final against South Africa. Known for his effectiveness against India, Henry was instrumental in New Zealand’s campaign.
At the toss, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner confirmed that Henry had not recovered in time for the final. As a result, the Kiwis had to adjust their playing XI, bringing in Nathan Smith as his replacement.
However, his absence forced the Black Caps to adjust their bowling lineup for the crucial final in Dubai. During the semi-final match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Henry injured his shoulder while attempting a catch to dismiss South African batsman Heinrich Klaasen.
The injury occurred in the deep field and immediately raised concerns about his availability for the final. Despite initial hopes that he might recover in time, subsequent assessments confirmed that the injury was severe enough to sideline him for the crucial match against India.
Impact on New Zealand’s Campaign
Henry’s absence is a considerable blow to New Zealand‘s bowling attack. He is the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, having delivered consistent performances throughout the competition. His ability to swing the ball both ways and maintain disciplined line and length has troubled many top-order batsmen.
In the group stage match against India, Matt Henry showcased his prowess by claiming a five-wicket haul, even though New Zealand ended up on the losing side. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner expressed uncertainty regarding Henry’s participation in the final during a pre-match press conference.
He mentioned that Henry would undergo a fitness test to evaluate his readiness. However, the final decision was made to prioritize the player’s long-term health, leading to his exclusion from the match.
Here are the playing XI of both teams:
New Zealand: Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(w), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner(c), Kyle Jamieson, William ORourke, Nathan Smith
India: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh
