In a high-stakes final of the Champions Trophy 2025, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bat first against India in Dubai. The Kiwis had to make a forced change as Matt Henry was ruled out due to a shoulder injury, bringing in Nathan Smith as a like-for-like replacement. India, however, fielded an unchanged XI for the crucial match.

The toss loss continued a worrying trend for India, marking their 15th consecutive toss defeat in ODIs and the 12th straight under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. This unfortunate streak saw Rohit equal the record for most consecutive toss losses in ODIs, a dubious milestone previously held by West Indies legend Brian Lara.

Toss Decisions and Team Strategies

At the toss, Santner expressed confidence in his team’s decision to bat first, stating that the pitch was similar to the one they had played on a week earlier against India. He emphasized the importance of putting runs on the board and expected the pitch to slow down later in the game. He also acknowledged the presence of Indian fans, creating an electrifying atmosphere. While discussing team changes, Santner confirmed Henry’s injury and welcomed Nathan Smith into the lineup.

Despite the toss loss, Rohit Sharma remained unfazed, asserting that batting first or second did not significantly impact India’s approach. He emphasized that India had both chased and defended successfully in recent matches, which boosted their confidence. Rohit reiterated that the team was focused on performance rather than toss outcomes and acknowledged New Zealand’s strong record in ICC tournaments. India’s strategy remained unchanged, with the same playing XI as in their previous encounters.

Playing XIs for the Final

The teams entered the final with well-balanced lineups. India’s squad included key players such as Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Shami, while their spin attack was led by Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

New Zealand’s XI, captained by Mitchell Santner, featured experienced players like Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, and Glenn Phillips, along with a strong bowling unit including Kyle Jamieson and William O’Rourke.

As the match began, all eyes were on India’s response to yet another lost toss and whether Rohit Sharma’s men could overcome New Zealand’s challenge to claim the prestigious ICC trophy.
