Since making his professional debut in 2018, Varun Chakaravarthy has established himself as a reliable spinner in white-ball cricket. He has played 27 List A matches and 106 T20s, earning a call-up to the Indian national team. However, his early international career had setbacks, particularly during India’s 2021 T20 World Cup campaign, where both the team and his personal performance came under scrutiny.
Determined to improve, he refined his skills, which eventually paid off in the ICC Champions Trophy. He played a crucial role in India’s triumphant run, finishing as the joint highest-wicket taker with nine wickets, including a match-winning five-wicket haul against New Zealand. Despite excelling in limited-overs formats, he has played just one first-class match, highlighting his minimal experience in red-ball cricket.
Challenges in Test Cricket
Although Chakaravarthy has an interest in Test cricket, he acknowledges that his bowling style is not suited for the format. In a conversation on a YouTube podcast with Gobinath, he admitted that his fast-paced spin limits his ability to bowl long spells required in Test matches. “Test cricket demands continuous bowling of 20-30 overs, but my bowling style allows me to bowl only 10-15 overs at a time,” he explained. Given this limitation, he has chosen to focus on white-ball cricket, particularly the 20-over and 50-over formats, where he can make the most of his abilities.
Transition from Fast Bowling to Spin
Chakaravarthy’s journey in cricket has been unconventional. He initially left the sport to pursue an architecture degree and worked in Chennai before returning to chase his cricketing dreams. Originally a wicketkeeper-batter in his school days, he transitioned to medium-pace bowling before finally settling on spin.
Reflecting on this decision, he expressed no regrets, explaining that Tamil Nadu’s pitches favor spin over pace. He cited examples like Ravichandran Ashwin, who also transitioned from fast bowling to spin, and emphasized that he made the right choice for his career. While Test cricket may not be in his future, Chakaravarthy has carved out a successful niche in limited-overs cricket, making a significant impact on the Indian team.
