Seventeen-year-old Faf Du Plessis has been named the captain of Namibia’s U-19 cricket team for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. Sharing a name with the well-known South African cricketer currently playing in the IPL, this young talent has made a name for himself as a right-handed batter and a leg-break bowler.
With three prior appearances for Namibia’s U-19 squad, Du Plessis is set to lead his team in the Division 1 Qualifiers, where they will compete for a spot in the 2026 ICC U-19 World Cup.
Namibia’s Qualification Challenge in Africa
Namibia will face stiff competition from teams such as Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Uganda in the qualifiers, which will be held in Lagos, Nigeria. The tournament kicks off with Namibia’s opening match against Nigeria on March 28, followed by a crucial encounter against Sierra Leone at the University of Lagos Cricket Oval.
The ultimate prize of this qualification round is a ticket to the 2026 U-19 World Cup, where the winning team will represent the African continent.

While Zimbabwe has already secured a spot as a co-host of the tournament, Namibia must earn their place through the qualifying matches. If successful, they will have the rare opportunity to compete as a co-host, with Zimbabwe and Namibia set to jointly stage the 16th edition of the prestigious event.
Australia Set to Defend U-19 World Cup Title
The 2026 U-19 World Cup promises to be an exciting tournament, with Australia entering as the defending champions. In the previous edition held in South Africa, they clinched the title by defeating India in the final. The Australian team posted a competitive 253-7 in 50 overs, led by Harjas Singh’s 55-run contribution.
India, despite a fighting 47 from Adarsh Singh, fell short at 174 runs, giving Australia a comfortable 79-run victory. Before the final, Australia narrowly edged past Pakistan in the semi-final, while India secured their spot by overcoming the hosts, South Africa. As Namibia embarks on its qualification journey, the team will be eager to join the ranks of the world’s top youth teams in the 2026 tournament.
