Eden Gardens Curator Responds To KKR’s Concerns After IPL 2025 Loss

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had a rough start to their IPL 2025 campaign, suffering a seven-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens. The Ajinkya Rahane-led team failed to capitalize on home advantage, with RCB’s left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya emerging as the top wicket-taker.

Following the match, Rahane expressed a desire for spin-friendly conditions but acknowledged that the pitch had been under covers for over a day. He remained confident in the abilities of KKR’s key spinners, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, who managed to take a wicket each despite the challenging conditions.

Eden Gardens Curator Dismisses Pitch Concerns

Amid discussions about the pitch, Eden Gardens curator Sujan Mukherjee firmly stated that the surface would not be altered to suit any team’s preferences. He pointed out that IPL rules prevent franchises from influencing pitch preparation and emphasized that the conditions at Eden have remained consistent under his tenure. “The pitches here have always been this way. Nothing has changed, and nothing will be changed,” Mukherjee.

He also highlighted the effectiveness of RCB’s spinners, who collectively took four wickets, including three by Krunal Pandya. In contrast, KKR’s spinners struggled to make an impact. Mukherjee specifically mentioned Suyash Sharma’s ability to turn the ball effectively, questioning why KKR’s spinners could not do the same.

Bharat Arun Backs Andre Russell to Bounce Back

Following KKR’s underwhelming performance, bowling coach Bharat Arun voiced his support for Andre Russell, who managed just four runs in the match.

Arun emphasized that failure is a natural part of the sport and expressed confidence that Russell would respond strongly in KKR’s upcoming clash against Rajasthan Royals. “Champions like Russell always have the hunger to prove themselves. He knows he didn’t perform last game, and I’m sure he’ll come back stronger,” Arun said in the pre-match press conference. With KKR’s middle order struggling in the opener, the team will look to Russell and Venkatesh Iyer to step up and deliver in their next game in Guwahati.
