IPL 2025: Digvesh Rathi’s Aggressive Celebration Sparks Controversy

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi stirred controversy with his animated send-off to Punjab Kings (PBKS) opener Priyansh Arya during their IPL 2025 match. The incident occurred in the third over of PBKS’s innings when Priyansh mistimed a shot off Rathi’s bowling.

The ball soared into the air before being comfortably caught by Shardul Thakur at mid-on, giving LSG their first wicket. However, Rathi’s reaction drew attention—he ran towards Priyansh and made a symbolic gesture indicating that he had added the batter to his list of dismissals.

The on-field umpire intervened, briefly speaking with the bowler about his actions. This display did not sit well with legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who criticized Rathi’s behavior, pointing out that batters do not celebrate similarly every time they hit a boundary off a bowler.

Punjab Kings’ Bowling Dominance in Powerplay

Punjab Kings made full use of their disciplined bowling attack to restrict LSG to a moderate total of 171 for 7 on a tricky pitch at Ekana Stadium. The surface was unpredictable, with variable bounce and two-paced behavior making stroke play difficult.

PBKS’s pacers, led by Arshdeep Singh, dismantled the LSG top order within the first six overs. Despite solid contributions from Nicholas Pooran (44 off 30 balls) and Ayush Badoni (41 off 33 balls), LSG struggled to post a commanding total.

The Punjab bowlers worked in unison, with spinners Glenn Maxwell (1/22 in 3 overs) and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/36 in 4 overs) providing crucial support. Fast bowlers Lockie Ferguson (1/26 in 3 overs), Arshdeep (3/43 in 4 overs), and Marco Jansen (1/28 in 4 overs) maintained pressure, ensuring LSG never gained control of the game.

Strategic Field Placements and Pitch Conditions

Punjab Kings’ disciplined bowling was further complemented by the tactical field placements set by captain Shreyas Iyer. His smart decisions ensured that LSG batters struggled to find gaps and accelerate the scoring. The pitch played a significant role in the contest, as some deliveries gripped while others bounced unexpectedly.

Amidst these challenges, Nicholas Pooran was the only batter who seemed comfortable against both pacers and spinners. His ability to adapt to the surface stood out, but it was not enough to push LSG to a dominant total. Ultimately, Punjab Kings capitalized on their effective bowling attack and strategic captaincy to keep the game in their control.
