In a disappointing performance for the home crowd at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai Super Kings struggled mightily against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 25th match of the Indian Premier League 2025. After being put in to bat by KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, CSK could only muster a paltry 103 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their full 20 overs. This total marked CSK’s lowest ever score at their beloved Chepauk.
The KKR innings began with explosive intent, courtesy of their opening pair Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine. The duo raced to a quick 46 runs in just the first four overs, putting immense pressure on the CSK bowlers. De Kock, in particular, looked dangerous, smashing three sixes in his brief but impactful innings.
Kamboj’s Debut Delight, De Kock Departs
However, in the first ball of the fifth over, CSK managed to get their first breakthrough, thanks to a young debutant. Anshul Kamboj, the right-arm medium pacer making his debut for CSK after being acquired for a significant ₹3.8 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, struck gold.

De Kock, attempting a big swing across the line, missed the ball completely, and Kamboj’s good length delivery crashed into his off-stump. The South African opener was dismissed for a quickfire 23 off just 16 deliveries, including three towering sixes.

KKR in Command Despite Early Wicket
While the wicket provided a moment of celebration for the CSK faithful, it did little to stem the flow of runs. Sunil Narine continued his aggressive assault, and with Ajinkya Rahane providing steady support, KKR continued to dominate the chase. At the time of De Kock’s dismissal, KKR had already reached 46/1 in just 4.1 overs, setting a strong platform for a comfortable victory.
Match Situation and Outlook
Anshul Kamboj’s debut wicket of a well-set Quinton de Kock will undoubtedly be a memorable moment for the young bowler. However, CSK will need a lot more than just this solitary breakthrough if they are to defend their meager total against a confident KKR batting lineup. The early onslaught from the KKR openers has put them firmly in control of the match.
Kolkata Knight Riders need just 19 more runs with 13 overs remaining, and look set to secure a comfortable victory.
