Jay Shah Becomes First ICC Chairman to Visit Botswana, Addresses Associate Member Concerns

Jay Shah’s visit to Botswana was both historic and highly significant, as it marked the first time a sitting ICC chairman traveled to the African nation. As the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the newly-elected Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), he’s one of the most influential figures in global cricket today. His leadership is seen as progressive, modern, and inclusive—a perfect fit for a sport striving to expand its global footprint.

The Context of the Visit

Fresh off crucial ICC meetings in Zimbabwe, Shah made an unprecedented trip to Botswana from April 14 to 16, 2024. This wasn’t just a diplomatic formality; it was a symbol of hope and recognition for a cricketing nation often overshadowed in the global narrative. Botswana is an emerging hub for the sport in Southern Africa. The visit recognized the country’s efforts in growing cricket at the grassroots level and hinted at more support for similar nations.

ICC and Africa – A Brief Backstory

The ICC Chairman holds the reins of global cricket policy, outreach, and development. Jay Shah’s trip is part of a shift toward a more balanced, inclusive approach. African Associate Members often lack the funding, exposure, and infrastructure needed to grow. They’re passionate, yes—but passion alone can’t buy stadium lights or coaching facilities.

The Botswana Visit in Detail

During his three-day visit from April 14 to 16, Jay Shah maintained a packed schedule, seamlessly shifting from wildlife reserves to conference rooms, ensuring every interaction was meaningful and engaging. In Kasane, he experienced Botswana’s breathtaking natural beauty, while Gaborone, the capital, became the central hub for his official engagements. The BCA Ovals in Gaborone played a crucial role in the trip, serving as the heart of cricket discussions.

Shah was accompanied by a delegation of key stakeholders, including officials from the Zimbabwe Cricket Board and ICC, further emphasizing the significance of his visit. Shah was joined by Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Dr. Tavengwa Mukuhlani and other ICC officials. Meetings were coordinated by Indian High Commissioner Bharat Kumar Kuthati.

Major Meetings and Discussions

Sumod Damodar, BCA vice-chairman, called the visit “indelible.” And rightly so. Shah met with players, coaches, and staff—leaving behind a sense of inspiration that won’t be forgotten soon.

“I am personally very grateful to Mr. Shah, for making the visit, in spite of his busy schedule. His brief presence at the BCA Ovals, where he met with the national coach, staff, few players, and some of the affiliates, has left a positive indelible mark in their minds, ” said Sumod Damodar, vice-chairman of BCA.

“Many discussions that ensued during the visit revolved around the importance of identifying avenues to improving cricket, especially Associate Members (AM). I was fortunate to find opportune moments to discuss pertinent and very relevant matters pertaining to AMs, in relation to Africa and globally.” Damodar is an incumbent on the ICC Chief Executives Committee (CEC) and Associate Members Committee (AMC).

Shah also had sit-downs with Sports Minister Jacob Kelebeng, BNSC, BNOC, and MoSA reps. These talks weren’t just ceremonial—they were focused on collaboration, development, and shared goals. Bharat Kumar Kuthati played a key part, connecting dots and making sure everything went smoothly. His role in bridging India and Botswana was crucial.

Expect developmental projects, coach training programs, and ICC-sanctioned tournaments in the near future. Shah’s team is already outlining a roadmap tailored for Botswana and similar Associate Members. This visit might just be the spark that lights up African cricket’s next big chapter.
