The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a painful decision after a recent terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area of Kashmir. On Tuesday afternoon, a group of terrorists opened fire near an immensely popular tourist destination, killing at least 26 people. This attack is one of the deadliest in the Kashmir Valley since the 2019 Pulwama incident. As the entire nation grieves this terrible loss of life, the Indian cricket board has decided to pay their respects to the victims.
In the wake of this recent tragedy, the BCCI resolved to observe a minute’s silence before the Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Wednesday between SRH and Mumbai Indians to be held at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. In addition, players and umpires will wear black armbands as a sign of respect and condolences to the people who lost their lives in the attack.
No fireworks and cheerleaders in SRH vs MI IPL match

The board has declared its firm decision to ban fireworks since it wanted to show respect toward the victims of the attack. Adding to the solemnity of the match is the fact that cheerleaders will also not be performing. This was stated by a BCCI source: “We are aghast at this attack. We’ve decided not to have cheerleaders and fireworks in today’s IPL match in Hyderabad. Players and umpires are wearing black armbands. A minute’s silence will also be observed right before the start of the game.”
The least that could be done to honor the lives lost would be to observe a minute of silence and wear a black armband; it is an act that shows the cricket fraternity stands with the families of the victims and with the nation as a whole.
The match between SRH and Mumbai Indians will throw into stark relief the unfortunate occurrences transpiring in Kashmir. This should remind our nation of the value of human lives and that tragedies must unite us. The BCCI will be reminding every single Indian that this cricket match involves human lives at stake, and the tribute will be a minor acknowledgement by the cricket board for a major affront.
