Rajasthan Royals (RR) are currently facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This match holds great significance for RR as they aim to break their four-match losing streak and secure their first win in a while.
In their previous game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi made a stunning debut, scoring 34 runs off 20 balls, including a six on the very first delivery he faced. Despite his impressive performance, he has not been included in the playing XI for tonight’s match.
IPL 2025 – A Historic Debut
RR’s clash against LSG will forever be remembered for one moment: Vaibhav walking out to open the innings. Facing the experienced Shardul Thakur, he casually launched the first ball of his IPL career over the ropes. By the end of the innings, he had 34 off 20 balls, with 2 fours and 3 sixes. This performance made him the youngest ever to play and score runs in the IPL.
Match Against RCB – What Changed?
Despite his brilliant debut, RR opted for a more bowler-heavy starting XI against RCB, which includes Jofra Archer, Hasaranga, and the newly added Fazalhaq Farooqi. To tweak their bowling, they brought in Farooqi for Theekshana. It’s all about match-ups, and RR’s analysts believed left-arm pace could trouble RCB’s top order more than spin. With Sanju Samson nursing a side strain, the leadership fell to Riyan Parag. That also influenced RR’s team balance, perhaps prompting a more experienced initial lineup.
Why Was Vaibhav Not in the Starting XI?
Despite his impressive debut, a 14-year-old isn’t likely to replace seasoned internationals in the playing XI right away. Rajasthan Royals are taking a measured approach, carefully managing Vaibhav’s exposure to prevent burnout rather than throwing him into every match.
However, being named as one of the five substitutes keeps him in the game. Since RR is bowling first, he stands a strong chance of coming in as an “Impact Batter” during the chase. If the team needs early firepower, Vaibhav could be the one to deliver, especially given his ability to thrive under pressure.
