Why Didn’t RCB Get A Five-Run Penalty For Suyash Sharma’s Cap Incident vs RR In IPL 2025?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) spinner Suyash Sharma picked up the ball with his cap while fielding during the team’s IPL 2025 match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Thursday, April 24. The incident occurred after the ninth over during RR’s unsuccessful run chase.

According to Rule 28.2.1.2 of the IPL Match Playing Conditions, it is illegal for a fielder to use any part of their clothing to field the ball. In such cases, the ball is immediately declared dead, and the fielding side is penalized five runs.

Suyash Sharma collected the ball with his cap near third man while backing up a throw. Play was briefly paused as the TV umpire reviewed the footage before the next over began. However, RCB were not penalized because the on-field umpire had already called “over,” rendering the ball dead before Suyash’s action took place.

RCB registered their first home win of IPL 2025, breaking a three-match losing streak at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. They sealed a thrilling 11-run triumph by defending a target of 206 runs.

Virat Kohli and Josh Hazlewood Shine in RCB’s First Home Win of IPL 2025

RR won the toss and opted to field first in the match. RCB posted a total of 205/5 after 20 overs. Virat Kohli was the standout performer with the bat, scoring 70 runs off 42 balls, while Devdutt Padikkal contributed a crucial 50 runs from 27 balls. Josh Hazlewood delivered an exceptional performance for Bengaluru, taking four wickets.

He was particularly impressive in the death overs, conceding only seven runs in his final two overs. Hazlewood bowled the vital penultimate over with RR needing 18 runs off 12 balls and five wickets in hand. He was outstanding, giving away just one run and dismissing Dhruv Jurel and Jofra Archer.

Hazlewood was named Player of the Match for his brilliant figures of 4-0-33-4. With this win, Bengaluru secured their sixth victory in nine games and moved up to third place in the points table.
