On a quiet Wednesday, May 7, the cricketing world stopped in its tracks as Rohit Sharma, the elegant Indian opener and current Test captain, dropped a bombshell on Instagram. With a simple post featuring his cherished Test cap, he announced his retirement from the longest format of the game.
Rohit Sharma’s Retirement Announcement
The announcement came just two weeks before the Indian selectors were to name the squad for the upcoming series against Englanf. With murmurs already circling about Rohit’s form and potential removal as captain, the retirement didn’t just end his Test journey—it ended all the chatter in one stroke.
Rohit shared a post on social media, “Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
Reactions from the Cricket World
Twitter and Instagram were flooded with montages, old clips, and heartfelt messages. The cricketing world came together to salute a legend. From Mumbaikars to die-hard cricket fans worldwide, emotions ran high. For many, Rohit wasn’t just a cricketer—he was a source of joy, hope, and belief.
Well played #RohitSharma. As player and as captain, you were a joy and India will say a big thank you to you. That century in Chennai, that one at the Oval, both priceless. You walked out against South Africa to open as if you had done it all your life. Will look forward to…

The walks from the pavilion, the silent understanding between the 22 yards, the shared laughs in the dressing room, and the dominating mindset in the middle.

Rohit Sharma’s Glorious Test Career
Rohit Sharma made his Test debut in November 2013 against the West Indies, stepping into the longest format after establishing himself in white-ball cricket. Though his Test career started late, he immediately impressed, smashing 177 runs in his debut innings and winning over fans.
Over 67 Tests, he scored 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. His highest score, a magnificent 212 against South Africa in 2019, highlighted his brilliance and ability to dominate red-ball cricket.
Rohit took over the Test captaincy in 2022, leading India in 24 matches, securing 12 wins and facing 9 losses. Although the team missed out on the World Test Championship Final in Australia, he guided India to the 2023 final at The Oval, cementing his legacy as a leader.
Signature Moments in Test Whites
Rohit Sharma announced his arrival in Test cricket with a sensational debut knock of 177, delivering one of the finest starts to a red-ball career. He followed it up with another century in his second Test, making his entry into the format truly remarkable.
Rohit Sharma opened the innings for the first time in Tests and responded with twin centuries in Visakhapatnam, proving his ability to dominate at the top. He then produced a career-best 212, a performance that silenced all doubts about his Test credentials.
Rohit Sharma stood firm in critical moments, delivering under pressure in India’s iconic victories—whether against England at Lord’s or during the Gabba win in 2021, despite being sidelined due to injury. His presence and resilience often provided stability when India needed it most.
Dwindling Form in Recent Series
Since October 2024, Rohit failed to notch a single fifty-plus score in nine innings. A visible slump that had fans and critics wondering whether he could bounce back. Rohit Sharma struggled in the Border-Gavaskar series, managing just 31 runs in three matches against Australia. His form dipped significantly, causing concerns for both him and his fans, who were accustomed to seeing him at his best.
After leading India to their second T20 World Cup title in the West Indies last year, Rohit bid adieu to T20s. It was a fairytale ending to that chapter, just as this Test retirement closes another. His exit creates a leadership vacuum. While KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah are options, none quite command the respect and calmness Rohit brought. Shubman Gill and Rahul are the frontrunners, but consistency and temperament will decide who truly fills Rohit’s shoes.
