After the sudden retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket, reports suggest that newly appointed India head coach Gautam Gambhir has asked the BCCI for full control over team matters. Gambhir, known for his no-nonsense approach, reportedly wants complete authority in areas such as team selection, policies, and strategies.
Since there are no senior players like Rohit and Kohli left to oppose his decisions, he may become the most powerful head coach India has had, surpassing even the captain in influence. According to reports, this request was made to prevent poor performances like the ones against New Zealand and Australia in previous Test series. Gambhir’s goal is to reshape the team with a future-oriented mindset, doing away with the superstar culture that has been a part of Indian cricket for years.
The New Leadership Race: Gill vs Bumrah
With the leadership position now vacant, two names are leading the race to become India’s next Test captain—Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah. Gill, being young and less experienced, is seen as someone who can work closely under Gambhir’s guidance without challenging his authority.
On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah has already held leadership responsibilities as Rohit’s deputy and has experience leading the team in the absence of senior players. He has even captained in tough overseas conditions, such as in Perth and Sydney. However, Bumrah’s frequent injuries might go against him in the final decision. If Gill is chosen over Bumrah, it would align with Gambhir’s vision of having a young and cooperative captain who supports the coach’s leadership style.
A New Era in Indian Test Cricket
The coming Test series against England starting June 20 in Leeds will mark the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket. For the first time, the head coach could have more control than the captain, which shows the BCCI’s faith in Gambhir’s long-term vision.
While he may have control only in the Test format, both Kohli and Rohit are expected to return strongly for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gambhir’s influence is likely to shape the future of Indian Test cricket, with young players like Gill at the forefront. This transition signals a major shift in leadership dynamics within the Indian cricket team.
