Team India’s star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, has reportedly decided not to pursue the role of Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement ahead of the upcoming England tour. According to Sky Sports, Bumrah has opted out due to his desire to manage his workload and not play all five Tests in England, making him unwilling to take on the captaincy.
Rohit Sharma‘s retirement from Test cricket left the captaincy spot vacant, especially after reports suggested that selectors were preparing to drop him from the squad. Bumrah, who had previously captained India on two occasions during the Australia tour, was considered a strong contender for the role. He even led India to a victory in Perth.
Jasprit Bumrah had taken over as captain for the fifth Test of the series in Sydney, with Rohit Sharma seemingly stepping aside. However, a recurring back injury prevented Bumrah from continuing in the match, and he was unable to bowl further as Australia went on to secure the win.
While the Ahmedabad-born cricketer has fully recovered, he will be closely monitored throughout the England series due to the history of recurring injuries. As a result, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are reportedly the leading candidates to take over as Test captain.
Virat Kohli May Soon Join Rohit Sharma in Test Retirement
On Saturday, May 10, Sky Sports reported that star batter Virat Kohli is considering retirement from Test cricket. The right-handed batsman has allegedly informed chief selector Ajit Agarkar of his decision, but senior BCCI officials are expected to speak with him in an effort to convince him to reconsider.
India’s most recent Test series in England took place in 2022, a rescheduled match from the 2021 series. Despite leading 2-1 going into the final match, India was defeated by England at Edgbaston, resulting in a 2-2 draw. The upcoming series is scheduled to begin on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
