The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially postponed the T20 World Cup 2020. The tournament was scheduled to take place in Australia later this year. The IBC (the commercial subsidiary of the ICC) officials met today (July 19) over video conference to take the final decision.
A lot of speculations was going around in the last couple of weeks. While everyone expected a decision early, the apex body waited before taking the final call. The IBC officials also said that they will constantly monitor the situation in place.
ICC T20 World Cup in Australia postponed
Meanwhile, the next T20 World Cup is to take place in 2021 in India. The ICC is now looking to conduct both T20 World Cups in 2021. ICC’s Chief executive Officer Manu Sawhney said that the ICC have undertaken a complex contingency planning exercise. In this exercise, the priority of the ICC will be to protect the health and safety going ahead.
ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said: “We have undertaken a comprehensive and complex contingency planning exercise and through this process, our number one priority has been to protect the health and safety of everyone involved in the sport.
The ICC came up to this decision after considering all the options available to them. They assessed alternatives as well but as far they’re concerned, they want to deliver the two back to back T20 World Cups for the fans around the world in a safe & secure manner.
“The decision to postpone the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was taken after careful consideration of all of the options available to us and gives us the best possible opportunity of delivering two safe and successful T20 World Cups for fans around the world, added Manu Sawhney.
With the T20 world cup now postponed, we can surely assume that BCCI will go ahead with the IPL. Though the situation relating to the COVID-19 cases in India look very bleak at the moment. BCCI will look to host it in the United Arab Emirates as their cricket board is fully prepared to host the cash-rich league. The IPL Governing Council is likely to come out with an official announcement very soon.
