[WATCH]- Netherlands Stun With Record Chase As O’Dowd’s Unbeaten Knock Helps Them Win

Max O’Dowd smashed an unbeaten 158 from just 130 deliveries as the Netherlands pulled off the third-highest successful run chase in ODI history, defeating Scotland in a thrilling ICC World Cup League 2 encounter in Dundee on Thursday, June 12.

Earlier, Scotland had opted to bat first and piled up a massive 369/6, powered by a sensational 191 off 150 balls from opener George Munsey. Munsey’s innings, which included 14 fours and 11 sixes, now stands as the highest individual score by a batter from an Associate nation, eclipsing Paul Stirling’s 177 for Ireland against Canada in 2010.

Munsey, who narrowly missed out on a double century, was bowled by Vivian Kingma after sharing a 150-run partnership for the fifth wicket with captain Matthew Cross (59 off 49). In response, the Dutch got off to a flying start as O’Dowd and Michael Levitt (44 off 40) put on 67 runs in just 9.2 overs.

Scotland hit back through Safyaan Sharif (3/62), who removed Levitt and Zach Lion-Cachet (3) in quick succession, leaving the Netherlands at 75/2. However, a crucial 68-run partnership between O’Dowd and captain Scott Edwards (32 off 26) steadied the chase and kept the Dutch on course.

Wesley Barresi managed only 13 runs, but Max O’Dowd received vital support from Teja Nidamanuru, who scored a brisk 51 off 42 balls, and Noah Croes, who hammered a quickfire 50 off just 29 deliveries. O’Dowd stitched together a 111-run stand with Nidamanuru for the fifth wicket, followed by a 76-run partnership with Croes for the sixth.

Croes hit seven fours and a six before falling to Sharif, who claimed his third wicket. Fittingly, O’Dowd sealed the win with a six off Sharif, as the Netherlands chased 370 with four wickets and four balls to spare. Despite Munsey’s 191, O’Dowd was named Player of the Match for his 158*, which included 13 fours, four sixes, and two catches.

Netherlands pull off iconic chase to join exclusive ODI club

The Netherlands’ pursuit of 370 against Scotland on Thursday now ranks as the third-highest successful run chase in ODI history. The top two spots on the prestigious list are held by South Africa. Their most iconic chase came in March 2006 in Johannesburg, where they famously overhauled Australia’s 434, with Herschelle Gibbs playing a legendary knock of 175 off 111 balls.

South Africa also pulled off a remarkable chase of 372 against Australia in Durban in October 2016. Australia had posted a formidable 371/6, powered by centuries from David Warner (117) and Steven Smith (108).

However, David Miller stole the show with a blistering unbeaten 118 off just 79 deliveries, guiding the Proteas to what stands as the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.
