Major League Cricket: New Zealand Star Finn Allen Breaks Chris Gayle’s World Record

New Zealand’s explosive batter Finn Allen made a thunderous start to Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025, delivering a record-breaking performance in the opening match.

Representing the San Francisco Unicorns, Allen unleashed a storm against the Washington Freedom at Oakland Coliseum, hammering 151 runs from just 51 deliveries. His whirlwind knock came at a staggering strike rate of over 296 and featured five boundaries along with a jaw-dropping 19 sixes. This innings not only left the opposition bowlers in complete disarray but also etched Allen’s name in the record books.

Breaking Records in Style

Allen’s century came in just 34 balls, making it the fastest T20 century by a New Zealand batter and the quickest in MLC history. He continued his onslaught to reach 151 in only 49 balls. His 19 sixes broke the previous world record for the most sixes in a men’s T20 innings, overtaking Chris Gayle and Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, both of whom had struck 18 sixes.

Reflecting on his achievement, Allen described the experience as “exciting” and noted that they got off to a strong start with several key partnerships, helping the team post a massive total. He also mentioned that the ground dimensions allowed for regular boundary-hitting.

From IPL Snub to MLC Superstar

What makes Allen’s performance even more remarkable is his recent history in franchise cricket. Merely six months earlier, he went unsold at the IPL 2025 auction despite a base price of ₹2 crore.

In stark contrast, Indian stars saw record-breaking deals—Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history, snapped up by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore. Shreyas Iyer followed closely behind, signing with Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore, while Venkatesh Iyer was retained by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹23.75 crore.

Allen’s explosive MLC debut now raises questions about missed opportunities in the IPL and may very well revive his stock in global T20 leagues.

With this phenomenal knock, Allen not only reminded the cricketing world of his destructive capabilities but also redefined expectations in the MLC. His performance could be a turning point in his career, setting the stage for future success across leagues.
