As England gear up to face India in a highly anticipated five-match Test series starting June 20 at Leeds, all eyes will be on Joe Root. The former England captain has been a consistent run-machine over the past decade, and this series offers him an opportunity to etch his name further into the history books.
Root is chasing two Indian legends – Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar – as he looks to improve his already exceptional Test credentials. Root needs just 373 more runs to surpass Ricky Ponting’s career tally of 13,378, which would make him the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket history behind only Tendulkar, who finished with 15,921 runs.
Dominant Numbers Against India
Root has been especially prolific against India. In 30 Tests, he has scored 2,846 runs at an impressive average of 58.08, including 10 centuries and 11 half-centuries. His highest score against India is 218. When playing at home against the same opposition, Root’s numbers are even more formidable – 1,574 runs in just 15 Tests at a remarkable average of 74.95, including seven centuries and five fifties.
His top score in home conditions is 180 not out. Such statistics put him on track to potentially overtake Rahul Dravid, who holds the highest average in India-England Tests at 60.93. Root currently averages 58.55 in these encounters, and a century or two in this series could elevate him past Dravid.
WTC Form and Overall Impact
Root has been a standout performer in the World Test Championship (WTC) era as well. In the previous WTC cycle, he amassed 1,968 runs across 22 Tests and 40 innings at an average of 54.66, with seven centuries and seven fifties, and a best score of 262. He remains England’s highest run-scorer in Test history and fifth overall, with 11,245 runs. His current WTC numbers stand at 5,543 runs in 64 matches at an average of 51.80, including 18 centuries and 21 fifties. As the series kicks off at Headingley, Leeds, Root will aim to not only guide England to victory but also add another golden chapter to his already illustrious career.
