Jos Buttler Names The Greatest T20 Star Between Kohli And ABD

Jos Buttler was recently asked to choose between Indian star Virat Kohli and former South African captain AB de Villiers as the greatest T20 batter in world cricket. The English wicketkeeper-batter made his pick during a “winner stays on” challenge.

In the segment, Buttler chose de Villiers over Kohli. His decision was featured in a video shared on the Instagram page ‘For the Love of Cricket.’ Several other big names were also considered during the game but didn’t reach the final round, including Chris Gayle, Babar Azam, David Warner, Kevin Pietersen, Glenn Maxwell, and Yuvraj Singh.

Interestingly, the game began with a face-off between Buttler and Gayle, and Buttler immediately ruled himself out by picking the West Indies legend to advance. You can watch the video here:

Both Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers have had remarkable T20 careers. Kohli, the fifth-highest run-scorer in the format with 13,543 runs, retired from T20Is after India’s 2024 World Cup win but impressed in IPL 2025 with 657 runs for RCB. De Villiers, who retired in 2021, scored 9,424 runs in T20s with a striking rate of 150.13.

“Grateful for his time” – Jos Buttler recalls Virat Kohli’s advice on handling pressure

On the ‘For the Love of Cricket’ podcast, Jos Buttler shared how Virat Kohli advised him on handling pressure during IPL 2023, after Buttler struggled to match his stellar 2022 form.

“I just thought I am going to ask him (Virat Kohli) a couple of questions. He had just finished batting. I thought why not go over and ask him. The question, sort of, was about how do you manage expectations? There is more expectation on him than anyone in world cricket. one-and-a-half billion people, all wanting to see you score runs.”

“He was so generous with his time, so helpful about maybe that was just that one season where it was the best you ever had, and you just have to accept that. Don’t try to replicate it or feel the pressure. It’s okay—life will be fine, it’ll work out. I came away thankful for his time, grateful for his insights, and amazed by his knowledge of my game and what might work.”
