Rohit Sharma, known for his composed nature, recently shared insights into his calm approach during batting. Speaking to Star Sports, he revealed that he never enters an innings with a specific target in mind. “Whenever I bat, I don’t think of a target,” he said. Rohit believes that setting goals can sometimes limit performance.
Instead, he prefers to observe the situation and respond accordingly. “Sometimes you underachieve when you put the target. Go and bat. Assess the situation. If you feel you can take it, take it on.” His ability to adapt based on conditions has been one of his key strengths as a player and leader.
Dealing with Pressure and Emotions
In the same interview, Rohit reflected on the challenges of playing in high-pressure games like the World Cup finals. He openly admitted that such matches naturally bring nerves. “When we are playing these kinds of games, whether it’s final of the World Cup, of course, there are nerves. You know, you want to win, you want to play well, you want to perform,” he explained.
However, with years of experience playing for India, Rohit has developed the mental strength to manage these emotions. “You know, the experience of playing for India for so many years, being there also helps. You can control your emotions, you can control your thoughts and be in the moment.” His calmness has helped the team navigate through many intense situations.
Shifting Priorities in a Cricket Career
Rohit Sharma recently made a major career decision by announcing his retirement from Test cricket. On May 7, he posted the news on Instagram, thanking fans and bidding farewell to red-ball cricket. Before this, he had already stepped down from T20 internationals after winning the T20 World Cup the previous year.
Now, Rohit will focus only on One Day Internationals (ODIs), though the frequency of ODIs has reduced, meaning fans might not see him playing for India as often. Despite this, Rohit is set to return for the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh, starting on August 17.
The tour includes three ODIs and three T20Is, with the first two ODIs scheduled in Dhaka at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Excitingly, both Rohit and Virat Kohli are expected to be part of this series, bringing experience and star power back into the Indian lineup.
