The crowd erupted with applause when a steward effortlessly caught a towering six hit by Rishabh Pant on Day 2 (Saturday, June 21) of the first Test in the five-match series between India and England at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds. The highlight occurred on the very first ball of the 104th over in India’s innings.

Shoaib Bashir delivered a flighted ball on the stumps, and Pant responded by dropping to one knee and hammering a powerful slog-sweep over square leg for a huge six. Cheers filled the stadium as the steward made a clean catch, adding to the electric atmosphere in the stands.

Meanwhile, the left-hander delivered a brilliant performance, amassing 134 runs off 178 deliveries, including 12 boundaries and six massive sixes. In his 44th Test, he scored his seventh century, surpassing MS Dhoni’s record for the most Test hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper.

India Collapse After Centuries from Gill and Pant, Lose Final 7 Wickets for 41 Runs

India got off to a strong start after being put in to bat on Day 1. Yashasvi Jaiswal led the way with his fifth Test century, scoring 101 off 159 balls, which included 16 fours and a six. Skipper Shubman Gill rose to the occasion with his sixth hundred, while Rishabh Pant chipped in with a fluent half-century. By the close of play, India were in a commanding position at 359/3 after 85 overs, with Gill unbeaten on 127 and Pant on 65.

The duo continued their dominance into Day 2, adding 34 runs in the opening 10 overs. Pant, playing aggressively, reached his seventh Test century with a six, bringing up the milestone in just 146 balls. England finally managed a breakthrough when off-spinner Shoaib Bashir dismissed Gill for a well-crafted 147 off 227 deliveries, featuring 19 fours and a six.

India’s strong 209-run stand ended at 430/4, triggering a collapse. Karun Nair fell for a duck, Pant departed for 134, and Shardul Thakur added just one. By lunch, India had slipped to 454/7. England wrapped up the innings for 471, with the visitors losing their last seven wickets for just 41 runs. Stokes and Tongue took four wickets each to put the hosts on top.
