Captaining the Indian cricket team is one of the most prestigious and high-pressure roles in world cricket. While many leaders have started their journeys with victories or draws, a few began their captaincy careers with defeats.

These losses, though disheartening, came under challenging conditions—against powerful teams, on foreign soil, or amidst internal issues. Here is a look at six Indian Test captains who lost their first match as leaders, from the early days of Indian cricket to the modern era.

1. C. K. Nayudu – 1932 at Lord’s

C. K. Nayudu was India’s first-ever Test captain, leading the team in their historic debut against England at Lord’s in 1932. Despite the significance of the occasion, the team lacked international experience and struggled against England’s seasoned side.

India lost the match by 158 runs, but Nayudu’s effort laid the foundation for India’s Test future.

2. Maharajkumar of Vizianagaram (Vizzy) – 1936 at Lord’s

Vizianagram, known as Vizzy, captained India during the 1936 tour of England. His appointment was controversial, influenced more by status than skill. In his first Test as captain, again at Lord’s, India suffered a defeat by nine wickets. His leadership was widely criticized, and he didn’t last long in the role.

3. Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi – 1946 at Lord’s

Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, father of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, had previously played for England but later represented India. He led India in 1946 during their England tour. His debut match as captain, also at Lord’s, ended in a ten-wicket loss. Though an experienced player, his captaincy stint was brief and not impactful.

4. Lala Amarnath – 1947 at Brisbane

India’s first captain after independence, Lala Amarnath, was a respected figure in Indian cricket. In 1947, he led India in the first Test of the Australia tour in Brisbane. Facing Don Bradman’s mighty Australian side, India lost heavily by an innings and 226 runs. The challenge was enormous, and the team couldn’t match Australia’s dominance.

5. D. K. Gaekwad – 1959 at Nottingham

D. K. Gaekwad took charge during India’s 1959 tour of England. His first match as captain at Nottingham ended in a crushing defeat by an innings and 59 runs. Ill health and a quiet personality didn’t help his leadership, and he failed to win any of the four Tests he captained.

6. Virat Kohli – 2014 at Adelaide

Virat Kohli made his captaincy debut in December 2014 against Australia in Adelaide. Despite scoring a stunning 141 in the second innings and nearly pulling off a historic chase, India fell short and lost by 48 runs. Though he began with a loss, Kohli went on to become one of India’s most successful Test captains.

These captains each faced difficult beginnings but contributed to Indian cricket in their own ways. While some had short captaincy careers, others, like Kohli, turned early setbacks into long-term success. Their stories highlight the intense responsibility and unpredictable nature of leading the national team.
