Former England batter Kevin Pietersen made a bold statement while choosing between Steve Smith and Virat Kohli. During a chat with former Zimbabwe cricketer Pommie Mbwanga on Instagram, Pietersen was asked to pick the better batter between the two modern-era stars. Pietersen chose Virat Kohli, firmly stating that Smith isn’t even close in comparison.
“Kohli, Hands down. Freak show. His record chasing, winning games for India, with the amount of pressure that he consistently lives under, Smith doesn’t even come close,” Pietersen said.

Virat Kohli has built a reputation as the ‘chase master’ thanks to his outstanding performances while batting second. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he has amassed 8,063 runs in 166 matches while chasing, averaging an impressive 64.50 with a strike rate of 93.42, including 28 centuries and 41 fifties.
His record in successful ODI chases is even more remarkable, with an average of 89.50. In T20 Internationals, Kohli has scored 2,013 runs from 53 matches while chasing, maintaining an average of 67.10 and a strike rate of 136.47, along with 20 half-centuries.
Pietersen Names Kohli As Greater Than Tendulkar
In the same discussion, Kevin Pietersen was asked to choose between Virat Kohli and the iconic Sachin Tendulkar. He once again backed Kohli, citing his impressive stats and consistency in run chases as the deciding factors.
“Again Virat, because of his chasing numbers. His chasing numbers are frightening. He averages 80 in chases. His one-day hundreds come chasing. He consistently wins game of cricket for India. He just keeps on churning on the numbers. Chasing chasing chasing. That’s what drives me.”
“My ‘Man of the Match’ performances. It was not the way I played or how I played. It was how many ‘Man of the Match’ performances, how many games did you win for England,” Pietersen said, explaining the reasoning behind his pick.
